The Times Square shooting this week wasn’t random. It laid bare deep flaws in U.S. tourist zone security. Crowded tourist hubs are supposed to be secure.
Shots rang out just before 4 p.m. near West 44th Street and Seventh Avenue. EarthCam footage shows two people firing weapons then fleeing. Officers caught one suspect, recovered a gun. The suspect is under 18, identity unreleased. Officials are still probing the motive. One person was taken to hospital, but CBS New York reports no injuries.
The shooting happened hours after the Knicks championship parade. That event deployed 10,000 police officers. Officials say the two incidents were unrelated. New York is already packed with FIFA World Cup fans. A final match is set for July 19 at MetLife Stadium.
U.S. public safety agencies are failing to prepare for sudden violence in high-traffic areas.
